What is the nature of my relationship with the world?

Nothing determines the meaningfulness of one's life more than the nature of one's relationship with one's world. When there's harmony between oneself and one's world, all is well. When there's discord, all's lost. Both harmony and discord are abundantly meaningful. Perhaps the greater the potential for discord, the greater the potential for harmony and vice versa. Perhaps moments of anxiety present opportunities for us to more fully take ownership of our world—making it our own. At any rate, discord and harmony are dynamic terms. We feel in or out of tune with the world—in or out of rhythm with the people and events occurring in our lives. We flow more or less in accord with the dynamic contexts we inhabit, and we're always already making adjustments in an effort to improve our relationship with our world, even unconsciously.

We can't help but be aware of our relationship with the world, and, insofar as we're making the deliberate effort to improve the relationship, we'll be able to characterize in some sense the quality of that relationship and give a report of it. Yet as we examine it closer, we might be able to infer patterns in our self-world dynamic. These patterns will the be the 'rhythm' of the 'tune' our lives are 'playing.' Sometimes they hold us back from living our best lives, and sometimes they propel us forward to them. Explicitly asking the question of our relationship with the world can help uncover those patterns and even the general structures they rely on, and doing so can give us greater insight regarding how to bring ourselves into alignment with our own lives as being-in-the-world.
