Experience—particularly human experience—is typically the product of complex systems. Complex systems involve diverse, interdependent, adaptive entities, where the common ground shared by the entities is itself changing—that is, the rules or patterns according to which the entities interact are always changing. This is similar to how understanding works in hermeneutics. That which appears in our foregrounded experience constantly changes even as the (background) domain in which it appears and against which we make sense of it also changes. So, not only is there an adaptive response between foregrounded entities in the system, the ground serving as the basis of their mutual adaptations is changing. This is doubly-dynamic.

This Project is indirectly a complex system. Its formally indicative terms are flexible and change with respect to each other, both to maintain internal consistency in conceptual form and to become best suitable to indicate a wide range of actual experiences. This doubly-dynamic structure is meant to reflect something important about the way experience actually works, especially human experience. We're highly adaptive. Our natures are highly flexible. At the core of who and what we are is a question. The question is the central question addressed by this Project: What does it mean to be—to experience anything at all? We ask this question at all times, in countless ways, and in real time. As we become aware of the asking, we may realize that how we answer depends on how we ask, and how we ask depends on how we answer.

There's a circularity to this Project and to what experience means. But it's not a vicious circle, because asking and answering takes time, and so the circle is an open-ended loop (spiral) stretched out across time. What's happening is happening now, but now isn't a present moment of zero duration separate from the past and future. Now involves all time. To ask what's happening? is to invite an awareness of experience as not disconnected from the flow of duration. It's to invite an awareness of the continuity of being.

In the I-phase, U of W is experiencing as dynamic, and in the O-phase, U of N is the (adaptive, modulating) rhythmic attending involved in active intelligibility. In each case, this node is doubly dynamic in the ways expressed above. As applied to the realm of practical activity under the A-phase, we answer our core question—namely, what does it mean to exist (to experience anything at all)?—primarily according to how we're practically engaging with our world. To do or allow anything is to evaluate experience—to take a stand on what it means to be.
