The symbols for L-phase nodes are horizontally oriented disks, but they're wobbling disks, and so they extend more or less into the vertical dimension, marking out levels in a developmental progression. The F-node resolves into the vertical axis representing ideality; it thereby represents the final stage in a developmental progression, just before another developmental progression of higher order begins. At the completion of each developmental progression, greater orders of complexity are integrated into a more richly complex whole.
